My friend Snail, who is the expert around my way on all things in the animal and insect world, may be able to tell me what this is.
I said puffer or toad fish. But I was guessing.
And the bit at the front (mouth end) is bait and hook. Said fish was safely released into the briny when hook had been removed.

It's definitely a porcupine fish (cousin of the toadies and pufferfish). It looks very much like the globefish (Diodon nicthemerus) but I'm not sure if that has a trans-Tasman distribution. (I would imagine it does.)
Darwin observed the behaviour of porcupine fish while he was on HMS Beagle.
