Remember These?

Slate online has a very interesting piece about early readers for kids, questioning the use of PG13 film characters in a new series. (Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk). The link is here. Most of the piece is in the form of a slide show! And it shows pages from classic readers, as well as the new ones. It took me right back - not just to the Cat in the Hat but to A Fly Went By, Ten Apples up on Top and Frog and Toad. Great classics that helped us all learn to read. Worth a look just for reminiscing!

Ten apples up on top was my kindergarten favorite! But I do recall thinking, but why? why do they want apples on their heads? why?

LOL

It's funny - Dr Suess never did it for me (like the last poster i could never work out WHY one would want ten apples up on top or green eggs with ham - ick!) but I LOVED Frog and Toad. Seeing those pages brough back lovely childhood memories of reading to my mum.

My kids love Dr Suess. My youngest is currently learning to read and just loves joining in with the repetitive, rhyming language.

I have to say I'm one of those grumps that hate all the 'spin off' books. Each time bookclub comes out my kids ask for a Pokemon or Simpsons book and each time they get told no. On the odd occasion when I have relented the book has always been sub-standard.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Sherryl.

I have to admit that when I think back, the one I really remember is the kid who fed his fish too much fish food and the fish grew to humungous proportions!
Can't remember the title though.
